Two Square Concatenation

Here is a concatenation table for "b" (blue) and "g" (green).  The "o" is a symbol for concatenation, so:

    b o g = bg

o b g
b bb bg
g gb gg

Now we have four combinations for the four possible colorings of two squares:

bb

bg

gb

gg

How is this method of counting like the tree method?
