Center for Talent Development

Classes I've taught at the Center for Talent Development

The Center for Talent Development (CTD) at Northwestern University offers a wide range of resources for gifted students and their families, including a variety of enrichment opportunities for students. Below I've listed courses I've taught at the Center for Talent Development.

Courses taught in 2006

Math & Computers Honors (CTD-LL05-F-26C)

  • For students completing grades 6-12
  • Course Description: This course offers students an introduction to programming as a vehicle for explorations in mathematics. Mathematic concepts are drawn from linear algebra, analytic geometry, and trigonometry. Computer programming techniques are introduced as needed to highlight mathematical concepts. For example, computer graphics are used in exploration of vectors, and recursion is introduced in discussions of recursive definitions in mathematics. Previous computer experience is helpful, but not required. Students in this course will program in Logo, a language related to the Scheme language, which is used in computer science courses at the university level. Information on free versions of Logo available online are included in the course syllabus.
  • Credit awarded: 2 semesters of high school credit
  • Course Dates: Sept. 1, 2005 - May 31, 2006.

Circular Reasoning (SEPP06-W-15A)

  • For students completing grades 4-5
  • Course Description: Stop thinking in circles and start thinking about circles! A thorough examination of geometry will be conducted through the use of specially designed computer software. Students will specifically gain a deeper understanding of circles and ideas related to circles, including angles, sectors, and rotations.
  • Course Dates: January 7, 2006 - February 25, 2006
  • Location: Evanston Campus

Syllabi of Other Past Courses

I've taught all of the courses above at least once, some of them a number of times. Below are a few other courses I've taught in the past. If you're looking for someone to teach enrichment courses for your after school or distance learning program, please contact me at tj@leonelearningsystems.com or (847) 951-0127. The Center for Talent Development serves gifted kids, but I work well with kids at any performance level.

Leone Learning Systems, Inc. (LLS) is a North Shore company that provides a free geometry software package for children age 6 and up, and free resources for teachers and parents. This site includes information about things I teach, learning activities for kids, lesson plans, and an ongoing software and curriculum research and development effort, as well as links to books on related topics.
